from London University and a PhD in chemical physics from the
University of Kent. He is Scientific Secretary of the European

(CERRIE).

also sits on the UK Ministry of Defence Depleted Uranium Oversight
Board and is National Speaker on Science and Technology for

Megaton Hydrogen (thermonuclear) Bomb Tests in the Pacific Test
grounds centred on the Marshall Islands between 1950 and 1958
after the discovery that their atomic tests in the Nevada desert
and in New Mexico were causing fallout contamination as far away
as New York. The largest hydrogen bomb destroyed Bikini atoll.
Fallout in the Marshall Islands resulted in serious health effects
which have been systematically either ignored or covered up. The
question of the magnitude of these effects has come to the UN
Human Rights Council in Geneva and a Special Rapporteur was charged
with investigating the issue and producing a report for the September
meeting of the UNHRC in Geneva. The US Health Physics Society
had previously produced a biased and dishonest report arguing

The main recommendations of Dr Busby's reports were adopted by
the UN Special Rapporteur in his report to the General Assembly,

"The
future of nuclear energy depends on the industry finding somewhere
to put the high level waste. This is radioactive for millions
of years and must be isolated from the environment. The hitherto
intractable problem was apparently solved by the Swedish nuclear
industry who proposed a plan to encapsulate it in copper canisters
and bury it in tunnels 500m underneath the Baltic sea at Forsmark.
The full environmental impact report was released last year; the
government requirements are that the company SKB show that the
waste will not emerge from the canisters between 100,000 years
and 1 million years. After studying the report in detail it became
clear that the design was flawed because it did not include consideration
of the Helium gas produced from the alpha emitters. The volume
of gas in each canister would cause it to explode long before
100,000 years resulting in the contamination of the Baltic Sea
by the equivalent of 2000 Chernobyl accidents. Back to the drawing

Chris Busby, Scientific Secretary, European Committee on Radiation
Risk, March 19th 2011. [Editor's Note: This is an extremely
important approach to analysis, so I am reproducing an example
below . However, it is worth noting that even this approach
understates total radiation damage to human populations,
because it only looks at increased cancer rates, and does not
estimate myriad other forms of biological damage that occur
alongside increased cancer rates, to include premature
aging and increased rates of sterility, lowered IQs, increased
heart disease, and dramatically increased rates of mutation
and birth defects. Once ingested inside the body, radioactive
particles are particularly insidious because they adversely
affect DNA and cell functioning throughout the body,
and can create an almost infinite variety of increased medical
dysfunctions in a stealthy manner over a prolonged period of
time. Last, but not least, when people are warned about "dosage"
from a local nuclear power plant or fallout from a nuclearcatastrophe,
they are typically based on estimates of the spread of a single
radionucleotide such as radioactive iodine or Cesium 137. What
the public is frequently not told is that these particular
isotopes typically serve as simply "markers" or "proxies"
for myriad other radionucleotides that come with them,
such as various isotopes of radium, plutonium and uranium. According
to Leuren Moret, a Tennessee Valley Authority report stated
that as many as 1,300 "fission products" -- in other
words all the "fission products" of an atomic
bomb explosion -- come out of the steam stacks and through other
forms of "leakage" from nuclear power plants, and
the same of course holds true for pollution from nuclear accidents].
"Radioactivity
from the Fukushima Catastrophe is now reaching centres of population
like Tokyo and will appear in the USA. Authorities are downplaying
the risk on the basis of absorbed dose levels using the dose
coefficients of the International Commission on Radiological
Protection the ICRP. These dose coefficients and the ICRP radiation
risk model are unsafe for this purpose. This is clear from hundreds
of research studies of the Chernobyl accident outcomes. It has
also been conceded by the editor of the ICRP risk model, Dr
Jack Valentin, in a discussion with Chris Busby in Stockholm,
Sweden in April 2009. Valentin specifically stated in a videoed
interview (available on vimeo.com) that the ICRP model could
not be used to advise politicians of the health consequences
of a nuclear release like the one from Fukushima. Valentin agreed
that for certain internal exposures the risk model was insecure
by 2 orders of magnitude. The CERRIE committee stated that the
range of insecurity was between 10 and members of the committee
put the error at nearer to 1000, a factor which would be necessary
to explain the nuclear site child leukemia clusters. The ECRR
risk model was developed for situations like Fukushima.
Since
the ECRR 2003 Radiation Risk Model, updated in 2010, was developed
for just this situation it can be employed to assess the risk
in terms of cancer and other ill health. See www.euradcom.org.
It has been checked against many situations where the public
has been exposed to internal radioactivity and shown to be accurate.
Using
the ECRR 2010 radiation risk model the following guide to the
health effects of exposure can be employed.
Take
the dose which is published by the Japanese authorities. Multiply
it by 600. This is the approximate ECRR dose for the mixture
of internal radionuclides released from Fukushima. Then multiply
this number by 0.1. This is the ECRR 2010 cancer risk.
Example
1: According to Japanese chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano,
the dose from exposure to radioactive milk from Fukushima is
so low that you would have to drink milk for a year to get the
equivalent of a CT scan dose. A CT scan dose is about 10 milliSieverts
(mSv) Assuming you drink 500ml a day, the annual intake is 180litres
so the dose per litre is 0.055mSv. The ECRR dose per litre is
at maximum 0.055 x 600 = 33mSv. Thus the lifetime risk of cancer
following drinking a litre of such contaminated milk is 0.0033
or 0.33%. Thus 1000 people each drinking 1 litre of milk will
result in 3.3 cancers in the 50 years following the intake.
From
the results in Sweden and elsewhere following Chernobyl, these
cancers will probably appear in the 10 years following the exposure..."

and Mireille de Messieres. A review
states:
"The
study looked at the veterans’ children and grandchildren
and investigated the rates for miscarriages, stillbirths, infant
mortality, congenital illnesses and cancer. These rates were
then compared with national statistics and with the descendants
of unexposed controls. Richard Bramhall of the Low Level Radiation
Campaign summarized the results of this study as follows:
The findings are a challenge to conventional estimates of the
health impact of radiation, because high levels of miscarriages,
stillbirths and congenital conditions were found, though cancer
was not greatly elevated.
• Miscarriages were 2.75 times higher than expected,
• Stillbirths were 2.7 times higher than expected,
• The rates for congenital conditions are shocking.
In the veterans’ children they are 10 times higher than
expected. The grandchildren have almost as much — an
8.35-fold excess, indicating that genetic damage is being
passed down the generations at an unexpected rate. Conventional
genetic theory would suggest that damage would be diluted
in later generations. The study’s results for congenital
damage are in line with post-Chernobyl animal research that
shows such effects persisting for up to 22 generations. The
outlook for the future of the veterans’ families is
grim..."

radiation and cancer. Concerning the impending US war against
Iraq.
"If Dai Williams' analysis is correct the SHOCK
and AWE missile and bomb inventory (which I can send anyone
interested) is accurate. We are talking about 1900 tons of
DU (or perhaps U) which is equivalent to 60TBq of alpha and
beta particulate activity equivalent to the amount of alpha
emitting radioactive material Sellafield put into the Irish
Sea each year at the peak of its releases and about 50 times
the present amount released annually to the Irish Sea. This
DU will become widely dispersed and re: Israel I would not
want to be living within 1000 miles of Baghdad. As a crime
against humanity and a weapon of mass destruction this will
be in a class of its own."

The
European Committee on Radiation Risk (ECRR) concludes:
"The present cancer epidemic is a consequence of
exposure to global atmospheric weapons fallout in the periods
1959-1963 and that more recent releases of radioisotopes to
the environment from the operation of nuclear fuel cycle will
result in significant increases in cancer and other types
of ill health."

The
ECRR is based upon studies of chronic, internal exposure to
low-level nuclear isotopes in diverse populations: leukemia
in children on the Irish Sea Cost (Sellafield); Chernobyl children;
and civilians and military exposed to Depleted Uranium (DU)
armaments resulting in systemic harm and genetic damage.
"Using both the ECRR's new model and that of the
International Committee for Radiation Protection (ICRP), the
committee calculates the total number of deaths resulting
from the nuclear project since 1945. The ICRP calculation,
based on figures for doses to populations up to 1989 given
by the United Nations, results in 1,174,600 deaths from cancer.
The ECRR model predicts 61,600,000 deaths from cancer, 1,600,000
infant deaths and 1,900,000 fetal deaths. In addition the
ECRR predicts a 10% loss of life quality integrated over all
diseases and conditions in those who were exposed over the
period of global weapons fallout."

The shocking rates of infant mortality and cancer in
Iraqi city raise new questions about battle by Patrick Cockburn,

"Dr
Chris Busby, a visiting professor at the University of Ulster
and one of the authors of the survey of 4,800 individuals in
Fallujah, said it is difficult to pin down the exact cause of
the cancers and birth defects. He added that `to produce an
effect like this, some very major mutagenic exposure must have
occurred in 2004 when the attacks happened...'
"...In
the assault US commanders largely treated Fallujah as a free-fire
zone to try to reduce casualties among their own troops. British
officers were appalled by the lack of concern for civilian casualties.
"During preparatory operations in the November 2004 Fallujah
clearance operation, on one night over 40 155mm artillery rounds
were fired into a small sector of the city," recalled Brigadier
Nigel Aylwin-Foster, a British commander serving with the American
forces in Baghdad.
"He
added that the US commander who ordered this devastating use
of firepower did not consider it significant enough to mention
it in his daily report to the US general in command. Dr Busby
says that while he cannot identify the type of armaments used
by the Marines, the extent of genetic damage suffered by inhabitants
suggests the use of uranium in some form. He said: `My guess
is that they used a new weapon against buildings to break through
walls and kill those inside.'
The
survey was carried out by a team of 11 researchers in January
and February this year who visited 711 houses in Fallujah. A
questionnaire was filled in by householders giving details of
cancers, birth outcomes and infant mortality. Hitherto the Iraqi
government has been loath to respond to complaints from civilians
about damage to their health during military operations...
The
study, entitled "Cancer, Infant Mortality and Birth Sex-Ratio
in Fallujah, Iraq 2005-2009", is by Dr Busby, Malak Hamdan
and Entesar Ariabi, and concludes that anecdotal evidence of
a sharp rise in cancer and congenital birth defects is correct.
Infant mortality was found to be 80 per 1,000 births compared
to 19 in Egypt, 17 in Jordan and 9.7 in Kuwait. The report says
that the types of cancer are "similar to that in the Hiroshima
survivors who were exposed to ionising radiation from the bomb
and uranium in the fallout"
Researchers
found a 38-fold increase in leukaemia, a ten-fold increase in
female breast cancer and significant increases in lymphoma and
brain tumours in adults. At Hiroshima survivors showed a 17-fold
increase in leukaemia, but in Fallujah Dr Busby says what is
striking is not only the greater prevalence of cancer but the
speed with which it was affecting people.

"...Now
two researchers have a new theory that they say explains how
depleted uranium could cause genetic damage. Chris Busby of
the Institute of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science (IPNSS) in
Braunschweig, Germany, and the University of Ulster, UK, and
Ewald Schnug, director of the IPNSS, claim that uranium atoms
in the body could act as "radiation antennas". They
argue that uranium atoms could be capturing photons of background
gamma radiation and then re-emitting their energy as fast-moving
electrons that act on the surrounding tissue in the same way
as beta radiation. This `phantom radiation' could be over 1000
times more damaging than the alpha particles released by depleted
uranium's slow nuclear decay, according to their preliminary
calculations.
Their
theory invokes a well-known process called the photoelectric
effect. This is the main mechanism by which gamma photons with
energies of about 100 kiloelectronvolts (keV) or less are blocked
by matter: the photon transfers its energy to an electron in
the atom's electron cloud, which is ejected into the surroundings.
An
atom's ability to stop photons by this mechanism depends on
the fourth power of its atomic number - the number of protons
in its nucleus - so heavy elements are far better at intercepting
gamma radiation and X-rays than light elements. This means that
uranium could be especially effective at capturing photons and
kicking out damaging photoelectrons: with an atomic number of
92, uranium blocks low-energy gamma photons over 450 times as
effectively as the lighter element calcium, for instance.
Busby
and Schnug say that previous risk models have ignored this well-established
physical effect. They claim that depleted uranium could be kicking
out photoelectrons in the body's most vulnerable spots. Various
studies have shown that dissolved uranium - ingested in food
or water, for example - is liable to attach to DNA strands within
cells, because uranium binds strongly to DNA phosphate. "Photoelectrons
from uranium are therefore likely to be emitted precisely where
they will cause most damage to genetic material," says
Busby.
Busby
and Schnug base their claim on calculations of the photoelectrons
that would be produced by the interaction between normal background
levels of gamma radiation and uranium in the body. "Our
detailed calculations indicate that the phantom photoelectrons
are the predominant effect by far for uranium genome toxicity,
and that uranium could be 1500 times as powerful as an emitter
of photoelectrons than as an alpha emitter." Their computer
modelling results are described in a peer-reviewed paper to
be published in this month by the IPNSS in a book called Loads
and Fate of Fertiliser Derived Uranium....

fine particulate matter found carried in the dust, including
metals and bacteria, and has something to do with the dramatically
changed health of returning veterans." [Editor's Note:
"Depleted uranium" is only mentioned once at the very
end of this article. It appears that the Veterans Administration
and the military establishment in general is using "burn
pits" as a smoke screen to avoid directly confronting the
depleted uranium issue. Interestingly enough, author Kelley
Vlahos acknowledged the significance of depleted uranium in
several paragraphs in her April 2011 American Conservative
article Children
of War., which also pointed out how the military is covering
up this issue:
“I
think we have destroyed Iraq,” says Dr. Adil Shamoo,
a biochemist at the University of Maryland who specializes
in medical ethics and foreign policy. Shamoo, an Iraqi-American,
believes it’s “just common sense” to link
Iraq’s troubled health situation to the relentless bombing
of its towns and cities and the polluted aftermath of fighting
and occupation.
The
Department of Defense disagrees, rejecting claims that the
military is to blame for chronic illnesses, birth defects,
and high rates of cancer among the local population and its
own service members exposed to the same elements in theater.
